At the Olympics in Mexico on October 16, 1968 Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of the U.S . national anthem and received their medals shoe-less, wearing only black socks to represent Black poverty. Tommie Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent Black pride, John Carlos had his tracksuit top unzipped to show solidarity with all blue-collar workers in the U.S. and wore a necklace of beads for those individuals that were lynched, or killed and that no one said a prayer for. The white Olympian is an Australian man named Peter Norman. All of them wore Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) badges after Peter, who criticized Australia's previous White Australia Policy, expressed empathy and shared purpose with their cause.
