Ona - America's Founding Mother Vneck

$45.00

When George Washington was elected president, he had to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation’s capital. He took eight slaves, including Ona Judge. Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Rather than comply with the law, President Washington circumvented the law by sending his slaves back down to Mount Vernon Virginia every six months, just as the clock was about to expire.

When the opportunity for freedom presented itself, Ona left escaped to New England. At just 22 years-old, Ona aka "oney" became the subject of an intense manhunt led by George Washington, who used his political and personal contacts to recapture his property, but Ona was never caught. A Black woman, who was made a slave, beat the 1st President of the United States in her relentless desire for freedom, equality and justice.
